Reduced sleep on a regular basis has been known to increase your general levels of anxiety, weaken your immune system, decrease your ability to focus and reduce your overall energy levels. So
being able to make sure that you have enough time to have a good night’s rest is important if you want to stay healthy and at your best and valerian root can help tremendously in this capacity. The best way to use valerian root for treating insomnia is in supplement form, but the essential oil of the root can also be very helpful because it is often a lot more concentrated than the supplement.
If you’re taking valerian root supplements for sleep, I would recommend that you take the medication at least and hour or two before your bedtime with a warm cup of tea to help induce a more prominent sensation of drowsiness, allowing you to slip into a more comfortable sleep more easily.
When valerian is used on dogs, we tend to mixed results and because there isn’t enough experimental data on dogs to help form a clearer picture of exactly what effects this supplement has on them, it’s difficult to know which breeds to recommend it for and for which reasons. This means that the root can be used as a relatively cheap alternative to catnip in order to get much of the same effect and is helpful for calming cats in stressful situations, such as taking them to the vet or when you’re moving. However, when the root is used on cats, we see a much different effect to that of dogs and one that is more consistent across the board.
I for one am a big fan of getting enough sleep. I don’t know if it’s psychological but when I don’t get enough sleep, I feel like I’m just not functioning at my optimal. I know that I’m not the only one and I think that it’s not only psychological but also physiological. Your brain just isn’t functioning at its best when you haven’t slept. That’s what makes it supplements so useful for helping you to sleep. You just can’t be living your best life when you’re sleep deprived. I think that there’s something to be said for trying natural remedies wherever possible so that you don’t become reliant on other more addictive pharmaceutical methods. In this vein, valerian can be used effectively on both humans and dogs to create a relaxing effect. I prefer going the natural route because I know exactly what is going into my body, but some people don’t think that it’s as effective or strong enough. That being said, when the science backs it, the science backs it. Scientifically speaking, valerian root is one of the best roots to help you reduce anxiety and fall asleep so why wouldn’t you just try it out at the very least?
